BRSC Slogan: Alert Today – Alive Tomorrow

June 6, 2022

The Bermuda Road Safety Council introduced their slogan for the month of June is “Alert Today- Alive Tomorrow [Fatigued Driving].”

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Road Safety Council, along with the minister of Transport wishes to offer its deepest condolences to the families of the recent road traffic fatalities. The loss of a loved one is never easy and the community along with the BRSC shares in their loss.

“The BRSC introduces our slogan for June – Alert Today- Alive Tomorrow [Fatigued Driving]. According to the TCD Traffic Code Handbook – To All Users of the Road section 4 states: “Before using the road be sure that your alertness or sense of caution is not affected by alcohol or fatigue.”

“Fatigued driving which is defined as ‘The operation of a motor vehicle while being cognitively impaired by lack of sleep.’ When tired our reaction times are significantly reduced, decision-making is worsened, and our ability to judge speed and distance diminishes. So before you get behind the wheel of any vehicle make sure you have had a sufficient amount of sleep and that you are alert and aware of your surroundings.

“Driving while fatigued or drowsy is similar to alcohol in how it compromises your driving ability which reduces your alertness and attentiveness. If you are driving and you experience any of the following symptoms you may be experiencing fatigued driving:

  • Frequent blinking
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Heavy eyelids

“If you experience these symptoms while driving, pull over, stop your vehicle and do not attempt to start it again until you are fully awake. There are ways to prevent this from happening, by ensuring a driver gets adequate sleep, having a plan to drive if you plan to drink, and avoid driving during peak sleeping periods. Keeping alert and attentive while driving are key elements to safe driving.

“The BRSC continues in our efforts to encourage motorist to slow down. The dangers of speeding cannot be expressed enough and we ask you to reduce your speed. Too many lives are lost due to speeding each year and we must all do our part to change that. If you have to leave earlier to avoid speeding, that can be the difference between being safe and not being safe. Safety is about each one of us making a choice to drive safely. Choosing to drive the speed limit and not speeding reduces chances of high speed collisions. High speed collisions are preventable, if you are driving the correct speed the collision is avoidable. We ask that those motorist who speed to SLOW DOWN!!

“The BRSC continues its call to motorist to stop drunk driving. While we have seen the culture of drinking and driving behavior improve, the fight against it doesn’t stop. If you plan to go out to drink, plan how you will get home safely. Do not let a night of fun be ruined by not planning ahead. Planning ahead means ensuring you arrive home safely, and by incorporating one of these options you will do your part to keeping our roads safe from drunk driving:

  • Having a Designated Driver
  • Hiring a taxi or minibus
  • Calling or friend or relative to come pick you up

“As we enter into the summer months and with a holiday in the next couple of weeks we encourage all motorists to drive with care and caution, don’t drink and drive and to slow down. Remember that all vehicles share our roads and drivers of all experience levels, we must look out for each other and do our part to help make the roads safer.

“Be safe and have a happy holiday.

“Cautious Drivers = Safer Roads = Safer Bermuda”
