BWS Issue ‘Tropical Storm Warning’
[Updated] The Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] has issued a ‘Tropical Storm Watch’, noting that Potential Tropical Cyclone One is a “potential threat to Bermuda.”
Today’s [June 4] 12pm update from the BWS states the closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hours is forecast to be 110 nm to the NNW at 12pm on Monday [June 6] with the BWS noting that “this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track.”

The latest forecast from the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “At 200 PM EDT [1800 UTC], the disturbance was centered near latitude 27.3 North, longitude 80.5 West. The system is moving toward the northeast near 18 mph [30 km/h], and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight.
“A turn toward the east-northeast with an additional increase in forward speed is expected on Sunday, followed by a turn toward the east Monday night. On the forecast track, the disturbance is expected to move off of the east coast of Florida this afternoon, move over the southwestern Atlantic north of the Bahamas tonight, and move near or to the north of Bermuda on Monday.
“Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph [65 km/h] with higher gusts. The disturbance is expected to become a tropical storm off the east coast of Florida by tonight, and some strengthening is forecast tonight through Monday as the system moves farther away from Florida over the western Atlantic.

Update Sunday, June 6, 8am: The BWS said, “Earlier this morning, NHC upgraded PTC#1 to the first named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, Tropical Storm Alex. Alex is located just over 700 miles southwest of Bermuda. The forecast has changed very little since yesterday. Alex is forecast to produce tropical storm force winds in Bermuda from early tomorrow morning through most of Monday, along with wet weather, hazardous surf and very rough seas. BWS has issued a Tropical Storm Warning. Please stay up to date at www.weather.bm.”
