‘Increased Tropical Activity In The Atlantic Basin’

August 29, 2022

Minister of National Security Michael Weeks is “encouraging residents to maintain a level of preparedness in the face of increased tropical activity in the Atlantic basin.”

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Weather Service is currently monitoring several weather systems now appearing in the Atlantic Ocean, which have the potential to develop into tropical weather systems in the coming days.

“The Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation [DRRM] Team are carefully watching the weather systems that are currently in the Atlantic region. The Emergency Measures Organisation [EMO] and the Government are prepared for a disaster, should one occur,” said Minister of National Security Michael Weeks.

Minister Weeks stated: “While we have been blessed to have experienced a largely uneventful hurricane season so far, I must stress that our peak season has yet to start and we must prepare appropriately.

“I know that as residents we are used to disturbances at this time of year, but I urge everyone to ensure they are ready for a hurricane should one come our way this season.

“Now is the time to revisit your checklists, ensure you are stocked up on emergency supplies and do not wait until a storm is on its way.”

“Residents should also pay attention to vegetation from their property which could become a hazard to public roads or BELCO utility poles in a storm. All overgrown trees and branches should be cut down as soon as possible in the interest of public safety.

Minister Weeks added: “The public will be aware that September is when we usually see an increase in hurricane activity in our region.

“Storms are truly unpredictable, changing direction rapidly and unexpectedly. We have seen the immense damage they can cause.”

“Mariners must also be vigilant with inspections of their vessels and storm moorings in advance.

“The Atlantic hurricane season ends on 30 November.”
