Micah Franklin, the Bermuda squash coach, has hailed the displays of the island’s athletes at the Junior Caribbean Area Squash Championships in Georgetown, Guyana.

The competition, from July 9 to 17, was the first CASA in more than two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bermuda’s team, seven boys and five girls aged between 8 and 18, competed in the under-11, under-13, under-15, under-17, and under-19 age groups in individual and team events.

There were runners-up finishes for Mason Smith [boys under-11], Owen Rosorea [boys under-13], and Somers Stevenson [girls under-15].

Mckenna Kyme [girls under-13], Rose Paulos [girls under-15], Eli Carpol [boys under-15], Matthew Elliott [boys under-19] all placed fourth.

Andrew Cox [boys under-19] and Ariana Lowther [girls under-19] came sixth in their competitions.

In the team event, Bermuda boys finished third place, and the girls came fifth, leaving the island in fourth place.

Franklin said: “Overall, I am very pleased with the efforts from the junior squash team.

“I believe we overachieved what we sought to do and came home with more awards than we thought we would.

“Most importantly, I am thrilled to give most of these juniors the experience of their first overseas competition, which is vital for their development.

“I look forward to assisting these players to reach their full potential for the future.”
