Madelyn Moore and Emma Harvey have qualified for the 50 metres backstroke semi-finals tonight [Aug 2] at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Moore, who will compete in her third semi-final in Birmingham, finished fourth in her heat this morning in 29.29sec, while Harvey came fifth in her heat in 29.38 and will swim in her second semi-final.

Moore told Bernews: “I was hoping and praying to make this semi. I’m excited that Emma and I have both qualified.”

Harvey believes a place in the 50 backstroke final is not an entirely unrealistic aim.

“We’re not completely out of the finals,” she said. “We’ll just swim our best tonight and see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Jack Harvey has described the Games as a learning experience after finishing fourth in his heat in the 200 backstroke this morning.

Harvey, who finished in 2:05.93, said: “It was hard from the get-go. It was tough racing against guys who are like ten seconds faster than you.

“I’m not too satisfied with it, but it is what it is. I learned a lot about how I need to start executing my own race and not worry about others.

“You’re racing the fastest guys in the world, and it’s something to keep in mind because I want to be racing at their level one day.”
