Reminder: Marine Turtles Are A Protected Species
Following a video circulating showing a person hanging on to a turtle, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources [DENR] reminded the public that marine turtles are afforded protection under the Protected Species Act 2003.
A Government spokesperson said, “The Department of Environment and Natural Resources [DENR] wishes to remind the public that marine turtles are among many species afforded protection under the Protected Species Act 2003.
“Under the act, it is an offence to “disturb or harass” any protected species. Any person found to have done so commits an offence and may be liable on summary conviction to a fine of $25,000 or two years imprisonment.
“This reminder comes as DENR recently launched an investigation around a video circulating locally on social media. The video shows an individual in the water with two marine turtles, closely interacting and hanging onto one by its shell and getting pulled through the water [attached]. The Department is aware of the details in this case and will take the appropriate action.”
Short animation of the video circulating [if you are wondering why it is so blurred, it is as we are not sure how old this person is, as in whether it is an adult or teen/minor, so it is blurred as to err on side of caution!]
“More information on Bermuda’s protected species is available online here.”

For starters where & how old is this? Looks to be in some sort of man made enclosure.
The DNR must have more important issues to deal with.
brilliant…..all for social media recognition – hey everyone look at me! I am harassing a sea turtle, stressing it out so I can take a cool photo. Please use your heads….wild life should be left alone – watch and appreciate it from afar. It’s not yours to invade. RESPECT.
That looks like the ramp leading out of the back of the turtle pool to the sandy nesting area at the Aquarium.
Whoever this person is, you are selfish and dumb.
Devil’s hole???…..
