Minister Roban Appointed To Leaders Forum

September 6, 2022

Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs Walter Roban has been appointed as the 2022-2023 chair of the Blue Prosperity Leaders Forum.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs Roban said, “I am extremely honoured and excited to become the first-ever chair of this Leaders Forum.”

A government spokesperson said, “The first Blue Prosperity Leaders Forum Roundtable was in June at the 2022 United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. It brought together committed national leaders and supporting partners of the Blue Prosperity Coalition [BPC] to discuss current and future ocean stewardship goals.

“The Blue Prosperity Leaders Forum was established to unite like-minded, inspirational leaders and technical experts to create connections to safeguard the ocean and its valuable resources. Its mission is to achieve the shared global ocean conservation goals of having at least 30% of Marine Protected Areas be wholly protected and 100% sustainable ocean management.

“In addition to Bermuda, the Blue Prosperity Leaders Forum members include:

  • The Azores
  • The Federated States of Micronesia
  • Fiji
  • The Maldives
  • Samoa
  • Tonga

“The BPC will support the Leaders Forum through activities such as Blue Prosperity workshops and webinars, which will enable global collaboration opportunities led by technical experts, thought leaders, and ocean champions.”

Minister Roban said, “Thinking back only a few months ago, I recall among thousands of individuals across the Caribbean being recognised with the Caribbean Energy Leadership MVP Award. Just as I was then, I remain humbled that the leaders of these great nations have put their trust in me to be the first ever Chair of the Blue Prosperity Leaders Forum.

“And so in line with Bermuda’s Draft Blue Prosperity Plan, my ongoing commitment to the people of Bermuda, to develop and implement sustainable marine spatial plans and protect our environment while improving our economy, will extend internationally to other countries and island nations.

“I believe that through my contribution and those of other like-minded individuals in Bermuda and across the globe, our combined effort to address climate change and protect our environment will make the difference.”
