Sandcastle Crown & Corgi To Honour Queen

September 12, 2022

The Bermuda Sandcastle Competition paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in a uniquely Bermudian way, creating a sand sculpture depicting a corgi beside a crown.

The Queen, who died Thursday at the age of 96, is reported to have had four dogs, two of whom are Pembroke Welsh corgis, Muick and Sandy.

The Queen’s passion for corgis dated back to her childhood, when she fell in love with her father King George VI’s dog, Dookie. In 1944, on her 18th birthday, she was given a Pembroke Welsh corgi puppy named Susan. She went on to own dozens of corgis in her lifetime.

The Bermuda Sandcastle Competition posted the photos below online, saying, “Hey sandcastle lovers. I just want to take a moment away from our competition last week to recognize the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. While there are many different feelings about the Monarchy and how it has impacted the world, think we can agree this woman did her best to serve her country for 70 years with grace and dignity. May she rest in peace. PS: Corgis are really hard to do in sand!”
