A panel discussion on the role art plays in aiding mental awareness will be held at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art on Monday [Oct 10].

The Art and the Mind discussion, which runs from 5.30pm to 7.00pm, features Kendra Earls, the Masterworks Museum education officer, and Solstice pair Reilly Ingham, a registered art therapist, and Dr Jade Templer, a senior clinical psychologist.

Ms Earls, who has taught art for more than 25 years, hopes the open discussion attracts mental health care professionals and those struggling with their mental wellness.

“We will be talking about the importance art has on mental health and wellness, from children to adults, and the importance of being able to use the creative process,” said Ms Earls, a former art facilitator at Bermudian charity Action on Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

“We will cover lots of topics, looking at why it’s so important and why it’s needed now more than ever.

“The discussion will be great for people who work in mental health care to learn how effective art can be for people suffering from mental issues.”

Ms Earls, a mural artist, added, “Being creative helps you in so many ways to mentally manoeuvre your way through life. If we don’t use that muscle of the brain, we lose it.

“Our adult classes [at Masterworks Museum] fill up so quickly, I think because people are craving creativity. It’s such a natural part of us, but we don’t use it.”
