Photos & Video: Police Memorial Ceremony

October 10, 2022

The Bermuda Police Memorial Service was held on Sunday [Oct 9] in the Military Cemetery off Alexandra Road in Devonshire.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons said, “Police Week 2022, marks the 143rd year of service to the Bermuda community. We started this year’s Police Week observances with the children, at the Gymkhana, with its bicycle activities.

“On Wednesday 5th October, we held an Awards ceremony and recognized, members of the community, our Support Staff, Reserve colleagues and Police Officers, each for their outstanding efforts and achievements.

“This was followed by an inter-service sports day, that sadly saw Fire & the Regiment walk away with way too many prizes. There’s always next year! On Saturday evening [October 8th] we had a family feud game night, that despite my best efforts, saw wisdom and experience defeated by youthful vigor and enthusiasm.

“However, it is more than fitting that we closed out Police Week 2020 by paying tribute to our departed colleagues whose service to our community is to be cherished and remembered. This includes the work of our Support Staff and the Reserve Police.

“Call me biased, but I am firmly of view that there is no other job like policing. No other job that, in the moment, carries with it the immense powers to fundamentally impact a citizen’s life and the necessity of the weight of responsibility and accountability, to get it right. And it is this crucible of risk, expectation, shared sacrifice, and service that help forge the bonds that is the Bermuda Police, community.

“Today, we are joined by family, friends, support staff and both retired and serving police officers. We gather are here to mourn, to reflect, to fellowship together, both to laugh and to cry, and the thing that binds us together is the celebration of our departed, loved one’s, service to our community in Making Bermuda Safer.

“On this occasion you will see members of the Ex-Police Officers Association participate in this service. They play a vital role in the wellbeing and welfare of retired officers, and it is fitting that they should be prominent in this service. I wish to thank them for their work in ensuring retired officers are looked after.

“In closing, on behalf of the Bermuda Police Service, I offer both my condolences on the passing of your loved one and my sincere thanks for your sacrifice and support that enabled them to give a lifetime of service to our community. May God Bless you.”
