Family and friends were joined by members of the Bermuda Police Service and other dignitaries at the ceremonial police funeral for the late Police Constable Latasha Gibson which took place on Wednesday [July 5] at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity on Church Street.

A police spokesperson said, “It is with great sadness, that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved colleague, Police Constable 2253 Latasha Gibson.

“PC Gibson affectionately known to most as ‘Tasha’, started her career with the Bermuda Police Service on 14th March 2005. Because of her warm nature and cheerful personality, Tasha quickly became a well loved and respected member of the Bermuda Police family, especially in the Western Division where she spent most of her career.

“For personal reasons, Tasha decided to resign from the BPS in June 2008, however because of her love for the job and her willingness to serve the community, she quickly returned to service in October of 2009.

“Several years ago, Tasha was diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Despite her battle with this illness, Tasha put on a brave face and continued to serve her community as best she could, even if this meant she would attend work for just a few hours a day at Somerset Police Station to perform clerical duties.

“As a testament to her good natured character, when fellow colleagues learned Tasha would have to travel abroad for medical treatment, her BPS family did not hesitate to show their support by putting on several potluck fundraisers to assist with overseas medical expenses.

“When Tasha applied to join the BPS, she believed that becoming a police officer would be a great accomplishment for her. She also loved the idea of dealing with people and the different situations that arose. These were challenges that she felt would make her a stronger and wiser individual. She wanted to make a difference by becoming a role model for children and help to protect them from danger.

“Tasha will forever be remembered by her BPS family as being a respectful, friendly and mature officer who was always willing to assist and encouraged teamwork amongst her peers.

“On behalf of the Commissioner of Police Mr. Michael DeSilva and the Bermuda Police Service, Bermuda Reserve Police and BPS Support Staff, we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family and friends of PC Latasha Gibson.”
