Bermuda karting driver Scott Barnes aims to finish the year on a high note as he targets multiple podium finishes at the Daytona KartWeek in Florida.

The iconic Daytona International Speedway has proven to be a happy hunting ground for Barnes, who has claimed four wins and three second-place finishes in the annual competition.

This year marks his fifth appearance at the four-day event, which starts today, with Barnes racing in three classes: the Stock Honda 125, 125 Open and 206 Masters on the road course.

“Daytona KartWeek is always a relatively successful week for me,” Barnes told Bernews. “It’s a huge karting event in North America.

“It’s a high standard of racing; there will be around 20 drivers in each class. As always, I’ll be looking to pick up some wins.”

Barnes, who will be assisted by fellow local karting driver Jeff Sousa, said he was excited about once again experiencing the magic of the world-renowned track, the home of the Daytona 500 Nascar race.

“It’s such an iconic track all around the world,” said Barnes, who is sponsored by Butterfield & Vallis. “It’s a huge track, and to win here is really special.”

The 38-year-old has enjoyed a stellar year competing overseas, claiming two third places at the Skusa SuperNationals in Las Vegas last month, two wins at the Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix in September and securing victory in the Skusa Winter Series in February.

“It’s been a great year at the international level,” the Bermuda Karting Club president said. “I’ve picked up some big wins. Hopefully, I can end the year on a high.”
