Over 600 Sign Fishermen’s Association Petition
Over 600 people have signed an online petition from the Fishermen’s Association calling to ‘Stop BOPP fishing closures.’
The petition states, “We, the undersigned, stand in support of Bermuda’s fishing industry and in preserving our important heritage. We demand that the Bermuda Government immediately halt all moves to permanently decide on Bermuda’s future without the essential stakeholder input. This includes the allotting of 20% of Bermuda’s marine EEZ as a MPA.
“We support ensuring that the fishing industry has a greater seat at the table and that their advice and needs are listened to and incorporated. We demand that before permanent ‘no take” zones are established by a foreign entity, the government focuses on the pressing needs that have been highlighted for years in the fishing industry, including the lack of enforcement, establishing bag limits, and the restructuring of the licensing tiers as well as damage to the fishery from pollution and shoreline development. We believe future generations of Bermudians deserve us taking time to get this right.”
