Jan 28: Caledonian Society Annual Burns Supper
On Saturday, January 28, the Caledonian Society of Bermuda will celebrate its 83rd Burns Supper at the Mariner’s Club, Pembroke.
A spokesperson said, “The Caledonian Society of Bermuda held its first Burns Supper in January 1937 and has done so every year since except in January 2021 and 2022 due to the pandemic. On Saturday, 28th January 2023, the Society will celebrate its 83rd Burns Supper at the Mariner’s Club, Pembroke.
“This is one of the Society’s major fund-raising events of the year. The funds support the annual Education Award of $5000 which is given to a Bermudian student studying tertiary education at a college or university in Scotland. The 2019 recipient was Marcus Simmons, who attended the City of Glasgow College [the Glasgow Marine College campus] studying for an HNC in Nautical Science. Previous recipients include Chiara Lombardi, Jessica Dill, Lianna Aggarwal and Jonathan Starling. Para-athlete Jessica Lewis previously received $5000 to support her efforts.
“In 2021, in lieu of the Education Award, $5000 was donated to the Feeding Programme at Christ Church Warwick.
“Robert [Rabbie] Burns was born on the 25th January 1759 and became, and remains, one of Scotland’s most celebrated poets. Often described as Scotland’s National Bard, the Supper is open to anyone who enjoys an evening of convivial company, entertaining speeches and Scottish fare. To add to this year’s event, during the cocktail reception there will be a demonstration of Scottish dancing by members of the Bermuda Highland Dancers, supported by DJ [The Big Chill] Felix, and a whisky tasting plus a welcome drink, courtesy of Bacardi Ltd.
“And to round off the formal evening, we will have a wee Ceilidh!! With entertaining speeches, the dancing, a four-course meal, and convivial company, a good time is guaranteed for all!
