Several CedarBridge Academy students have received certificates after completing the first 12 weeks of a boxing course run by the Bermuda Boxing Federation [BBF].

Jaylon Roberts, a local amateur boxer, delivered the course on behalf of the BBF for 14 students aged 14 to 18 at CedarBridge Academy Gymnasium.

Among the awardees were Kallan Todd [Best Technique], Michael Burrows [Best Attitude], Terrae Trott [Most Coachable] and Jaidyn Wilson [Most Potential].

Roberts, who also coaches students from Dellwood Middle School at the Family Centre in Hamilton, said the youngsters learned boxing fundamentals, discipline, people skills and teamwork.

“There’s a lot of benefits youngsters can take from boxing aside from the fitness aspect,” Roberts told Bernews. “Boxing can improve discipline, listening skills and intelligence – it’s important to be a smart boxer.

“I’d like the thank Nathan Dill [the BBF president] and the Department of Youth, Culture and Sport for giving me this opportunity to coach these students.”

The 32-year-old, who moved to Bermuda in 2014 from North Carolina, said he hopes to continue his amateur boxing career soon and improve his record of nine wins from 12 contests.

“I’m staying fit and linked into the local boxing community,” the light heavyweight said. “When the opportunity arises, I’ll start back up again.”
