Jan 1 – 31: 490 Moving Violation Tickets Issued

February 1, 2023

During the month of January, there were 490 Moving Violation Tickets [MVTs] issued, the police confirmed.

A police spokesperson said, “During this most recent Operation Vega reporting period from Sunday, January 1st, 2023 to Tuesday, January 31st, 2023, 490 Moving Violation Tickets were issued.

“That is a 145 fewer than the 635 MVTs issued in the previous reporting period. In addition, during this reporting period, 73 Motorist Advisory Notices [MANs] were issued, up from 66 in the previous reporting period.

“A total of 8,755 MVTs have been reported since the implementation of Operation Vega on July 6th, 2021.”

Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell of the Tactical Support Unit said, “For the first month of 2023, we recorded fewer traffic offence infractions than we did in December last year. That said, the number of these infractions remains high.

“The Bermuda Police Service remains committed to achieving the objectives set out under Operation Vega – reduce collisions and harm on the roads and saving lives. However, buy in from the community is imperative to the success of this ongoing initiative.

“For January 2023, 14 people were arrested and charged with driving while impaired. For the corresponding month in 2022, the number of arrests for impaired driving was 12. For all of 2022, a total of 223 people were arrested for impaired driving. Motorists and other road users must understand they are responsible for their actions and behaviour when operating a vehicle.

“Our intention is not to be punitive but, we will continue our enforcement efforts through a combination of Operation Vega and other traffic abatement measures.”
