Lovintz Tota has moved closer to fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional boxer after signing a contract with a licensed manager.

Tota will now have to undergo full vetting and medical testing and demonstrate his skills in a gym assessment to earn a pro licence from the British Boxing Board of Control.

The 37-year-old, who has been training at the Team Greaves ABC gym in Oldham, Greater Manchester, for the past 12 months, has penned a contract with Maree Boxing, run by experienced matchmaker Kevin Maree.

“Without signing a contract with a pro manager, you won’t get a shot at a pro licence,” Tota told Bernews. “It’s great to have someone who believes in me.

“I’ll be sending off my pro contract today to the board of control, and, all being well, I’ll be able to make my debut as soon as possible.”

Tota said he has been making steady progress under coach Marvin Greaves and sparring against reputable professionals such as Mikey Gomez Jr, a super featherweight, who has won 18 of his 19 bouts.

“Mikey and I did nine rounds last week, and I’ve been sparring with other reputable pros,” said Tota, who won all four of his amateur contests. “I’m on a par with some of these guys, and I’m not even fighting ready yet.

“I just want to get my first fight out of the way and taste it for the first time.”

Although Tota, a former Devonshire Cougars footballer, plans to turn pro when most boxers are approaching retirement, he is adamant his age will not count against him.

“I’m up there in age, but I feel as though my body is just reaching its peak,” added Tota, who was set to represent Bermuda at the Americas Olympic qualifiers in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2021 before its cancellation because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I’ve always had a natural athleticism but never worked this hard.”
