Andre Lambe Reflects On Fight In Texas
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Andre Lambe said he is eager to make a swift return to the ring after his unbeaten professional record was ended by Bryce Sparrow in Galveston, Texas, at the weekend.
Lambe [12-1] lost his American Boxing Organisation North American welterweight title after being stopped in the second round by Sparrow [6-0].
The Bermudian southpaw said he felt in control of the eight-round contest before being caught by a punch he “did not see coming”.
He was knocked down twice in the second stanza before the referee waved off the bout.
“I was the more skilled fighter but got caught with a shot,” Lambe told Bernews. “It was the only punch he hit me with.
“It was an overhand right, a bolo punch. I just didn’t see it coming.”
The 30-year-old said he was encouraged by his start to the fight and was finding his rhythm before the stoppage and believed the defeat came down to a lapse in concentration rather than being outboxed.
“I was finding my rhythm and did well in the first round – I think I just got too comfortable,” he said.
“It wasn’t like it was the seventh or eighth round, losing every single round, and I couldn’t figure out a way to win.
“I need to stay on my guard more in a situation like that.”
Lambe said the defeat provided a valuable lesson as he continues to test himself against a higher calibre of opponent.
“It’s a learning experience for me,” he said. “I’m fighting at a higher level now – these aren’t journeymen.
“He was an outstanding amateur and has been signed by Top Rank [a global leader in boxing promotions].
“I need to fix some things. I want to get back in the ring soon.”
Having emerged from the contest physically unscathed, Lambe is keen to resume his career after a brief break.
“I’ll take a short break, nothing unusual,” he added. “I’m in good shape and my training camp went well. I want to build on that momentum.
“I wasn’t concussed or anything like that – it was a flash knockdown.
“I still want two more fights this year.”
