Scott Barnes continued his local dominance after wrapping up the Bermuda Karting Club [BKC] season with two more championships at the Southside Raceway in St David’s at the weekend.

Barnes won the Shifter and L206 Senior classes to increase his title wins to 21 – more than any other local driver in history.

The 38-year-old, who won his first Shifter title in the late Nineties, has surpassed his longstanding goal of claiming 20 titles and intends to take a year off from racing locally. He will, however, continue competing overseas.

“Winning 20 titles has always been the mark I wanted to hit,” Barnes told Bernews.

“That’s been the goal for the last few years, and I’m delighted to have reached it.

“Jason North is the only other driver who has won more than ten.

“I started the season in the Shifters to prepare for the SuperNats [in Las Vegas in December last year], but found myself in the points chase, so I decided to continue racing.

“If I never raced another local race, I’d be happy with my achievements. I’ve won nine Shifter titles, which is the premier class.”

Barnes, who became the first local driver in two decades to win three classes in a season in 2019, added: “I’m taking a year off from Bermuda racing. I need a break. I’ll be back, though, and we’ll see what the future brings. I guess the next big mark will be 30 titles!”
