The eighth installment of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s [BUEI] eight-part Island SOS [Sustainable Ocean Strategies] series is slated to take place at BUEI on Sunday, May 7th at 3:00 PM.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute is excited to announce that Bermuda will be highlighted once again in our next ‘BUEI Talks: Island SOS’ [Sustainable Ocean Strategies] presentation on Sunday, May 7th at 3:00 PM.

“Running monthly, ‘BUEI Talks: Island SOS’ aims to highlight forward thinking ocean development strategies from islands across the globe. Each ‘Island SOS’ presentation focuses on a singular island nation and topic, ranging from ideas of sustainable tourism to zero waste management.

“Next month’s speakers include Waterstart’s Founder JP Skinner, Operations and Research Manager, Phoebe Barboza, and Education Officer Anne Kermode.

“Launched in 2001, Waterstart is a non-profit organisation that teaches boating and scuba diving to Bermuda’s youth and continues to be a staple of the Bermudian scientific oceanic landscape.

“During their presentation, the team will discuss Waterstart’s ‘Shellfish Restoration Project’, which aims to monitor and assess the remaining shellfish populations around Burt Island in Bermuda. Over the years, a significant loss of shellfish has been witnessed in Bermuda’s waters. Proposed reasons for the decline include overfishing, loss of habitat [seagrass beds] and changes in water quality. On Sunday, May 7th, the Waterstart Team will present the steps being taken around Burt Island to restore the populations to sustainable levels.

A BUEI spokesperson said, “Waterstart’s primary goals are to develop critical thinking skills and build selfconfidence in students through practical skill training, to model sustainable practices and environmental awareness, to build an inclusive community of ocean stewards. These fundamental objectives align closely with BUEI’s Vision, and we look forward to welcoming the Waterstart Team as presenters in this year’s Island SOS series.”

“Each ‘Island SOS’ takes place live for an in-person audience at BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium with our overseas guests presenting via video link.
