On Monday [April 24], the cruise ship Celebrity Beyond – which was traveling from Florida to Azores – diverted to Bermuda to disembark a crew member and passenger in need of hospitalization.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Monday 24th April, 1:38 pm – Cruise ship Celebrity Beyond contacts RCC Bermuda from a position 500 miles Southwest of Bermuda on a trans-Atlantic voyage from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to the Azores advising that the ship plans to divert to Bermuda to disembark a crew member in need of hospitalization ashore. Later that afternoon the ship further advises that a passenger has suffered cardiac arrest and while now stabilized on a ventilator the ship will require assistance urgently disembarking this second emergency case as well.

“The 141,420 gross ton, 1,071 foot long Celebrity Beyond arrives off of St. David’s Head on the afternoon of Tuesday April 25th. Both patients, two of the ship’s medical staff and a family member are transferred to a waiting pilot boat which brings them to shore and into the care of hospital medical personnel in two ambulances waiting at Ordnance Island.

“The ship resumed her voyage with 2,179 passengers and 1,427 crew to Horta, Azores later that evening once the ship’s medical staff were back onboard from ashore.”
