Following the gathering, a spokesperson for the developers said, “A small group of Bermudians gathered at the Cabinet grounds today to express their concerns about the Special Development Order application for the Fairmont Southampton.
“This was just one of the several opportunities that local residents have had to share their objections about the proposed development. They were also invited to an open house at the hotel and a town hall meeting hosted by local MP’s and attended by Westend representatives on April 25th.

“We respect Bermudians’ right to protest and voice their opinions about the Fairmont SDO. Based on the small turnout at today’s event, it appears that there are many more residents who support the redevelopment of the Fairmont property.
“As we hope many people now realize, we are committed to respecting Bermuda’s landscape and building style, operating sustainably with renewable energy sources where possible, and employing hundreds of Bermudians to help us reinforce Bermuda’s position as a world-class destination.”
A quick look at people on the road in advance & comments from attendees
“Many Bermudians have had a positive reaction to the SDO, recognizing that the tourism and residential units are essential to the overall success of the Fairmont, understanding that those units will only be built based on demand and acknowledging the economic boost the development will have for Bermuda.
“For example, one of the comments made in response to the protest included, “Build, the sooner the better.”
YES to SDO !!!!
This Island is shutting down it is time to rebuild. !!!!
NO say NO to the SDO!!! A very bad deal for Bermuda. We are already paying Gencom through tax concessions to effectively get the best deal they possibly can. Why do we not negotiate and force a compromise? Gencom holds our hotel for ransom to get maximum profit, and threaten to walk out if they don’t get everything they want. THAT is not a business partner we want Bermuda. If we roll over on this and play the chump Gencom want us to be, another large area of open space and natural environment is lost forever. How much more can we lose on our already overdeveloped tiny island? There must be a fairer deal, if not with Gencom then with another developer (there are many out there). Bermuda will erode its brand image of exclusivity if we agree to deals like this which try to turn us into Miami beach. That will REALLY drive investors away.
