BNG Run For The Arts 5K Set For April 23
The Bermuda National Gallery [BNG] Run for the Arts 5K is set to be held on April 23.
A spokesperson said, “Bermuda National Gallery in collaboration with Nhuri Bashir, Donna Raynor and Domico Watson are excited to announce the BNG Run for the Arts 5K. This unique route through northeast Hamilton starts and finishes at the Parsons Road playground on Sunday, April 23.
“Sign up is open to all, and the event is sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletics Association. Timing is supplied by Bermuda Timing Systems and sign up is through https://bng.bm/run-for-the-arts/ or here
“The BNG Run for the Arts 5K features a competitive run along with a fun run/walk, open to those who consider themselves serious athletes and those who don’t. Starting from the Parsons Road park basketball courts, take in the sights and sounds of northeast Hamilton, Palmetto Road, Happy Valley, and finish in front of the Community Playground.
“This is not just a race but a community endeavour. Participants will help raise funds for the arts, including the installation of three large scale murals in North East Hamilton as part of a new vibrant public art programme in the area. Money raised from the run will also fund a paid placement on the Bermuda National Gallery internship programme for a student from the area and will support BNG’s education programmes.
“Organiser Nhuri Bashir, who grew up in the area, spoke to the importance of the event and art and how someone painting obscenities gave him an idea.”
Mr. Bashir said, “Within a few weeks, the obscenities had returned in the same locations. We had them painted again. They haven’t returned, but it made me think that if these spaces are available, they can be canvases for either bad or good. I prefer the good. I am also a well-traveled individual and some of my favorite areas to frequent have vibrant art as far as the eye can see. I would love for the area to be a mecca of sorts for the arts and art enthusiasts.
“It is a great cause and it’s a beautiful area. We can’t only talk about change – we can also be a part of it.”
BNG Executive Director Peter Lapsley said, “Art is for everyone and public art is an important way to share our stories and perspectives. The BNG Run for the Arts 5K is a great community event for the whole family and we look forward to sharing it with Bermuda.”
