Bermuda boxer Nikki Bascome said he is braced for another tough test when he faces his former opponent Alvin Lagumbay at The Shed in Dockyard next Saturday [May 27].

Bascome [11-1-0] defeated Lagumbay [14-6-1] by a unanimous decision at the Victualling Yard in Dockyard in June 2019 in an entertaining encounter and expects another hard night’s work against the tricky Filipino southpaw.

“He’s a tough opponent,” Bascome told Bernews. “I’m not taking him lightly. I’m training just as hard as the first time I fought him.

“I’m looking forward to putting on a good performance and getting the victory.”

In the previous fight, Lagumbay looked strong in the early rounds, landing several looping left hands on Bascome, whose right eye started swelling as early as the third.

Bascome made the necessary adjustments, seizing control in the fourth, dictating the pace of the contest with his accurate jab and opening up a cut over his opponent’s left eye by the eighth and final round.

“Preparations are a little bit easier as I’ve fought him before,” said Bascome, who has again dropped to super lightweight to meet Lagumbay. “I’m working on the things I need to work on and fixing my mistakes.”

At 32, Bascome knows he is entering the final chapters of his career but said he is “taking one fight at a time” and not looking too far ahead.

“Preparations have been going great,” he added. “I’ve sparred many rounds against the younger guys [at the Fresh and Hungry Boxing Gym in Warwick], and I’m already on weight. I’m not looking past this fight.

“I try to stay focused on preparations and training, keep a strong mind and focus on the task ahead.”

In the main event, Andre Lambe is up against Filipino Ronniel Tabayag in a six-round welterweight bout.

On the amateur undercard, Kaelin Cox fights Gabriel Curiel; Bruce Perinchief takes on N’Gai Franklin; Sweden Bashir meets Noah Andrews; and Josef Ferreira faces Tristan Burgess.
