BSF To Hold Awards Ceremony On June 1st
The Bermuda Sloop Foundation announced they will be hosting their Annual Awards Ceremony at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on 1 June 2023.
A spokesperson said, “Awards are presented to outstanding trainee crew from middle school residential voyages that took place during the 2022 – 2023 school year on board Spirit of Bermuda. The Foundation returned to their regular 5-day / 4-night experiential learning voyages for 13-year old middle school students last September. Since then, Spirit has hosted 247 students and 25 teachers from eight schools.
“At the ceremony, awards are presented to students who demonstrated the following characteristics during their youth development voyages, as nominated by teachers and crew:
- Initiative: Demonstrated initiative by being proactive and resourceful throughout the voyage.
- Leadership: Exemplified the qualities of a good leader by example and in the assisting of others during the voyage.
- Skills Mastery: Demonstrated an understanding and practice of hard skills needed to keep the ship running.
- Situational Awareness: Displayed critical thinking and assessment of situations [social or physical] that lead to positive judgement/decision making.
- Determination and Perseverence: Illustrated unwavering tenacity, often in the face of adversity, to achieve goals.
- Captain’s Award: Exemplified leadership by example in being a team player and facilitating crewmates to do their best, in addition to managing his/her duties effectively and take charge.
- Engineer’s Award: Displayed a keen interest and developed an understanding of the mechanics of the ship and their importance in maintaining a safe ship.”
Foundation CEO, Robin Hamill, said: “We’re very much looking forward to celebrating these students. Our goal at BSF is to ensure that Bermuda’s youth build the necessary skills to increase their long-term chances of success. During our residential voyages, they are immersed in a safe environment fostering positive behavior, building confidence, and cultivating critical life skills – preparing them to meet life’s challenges, overcome adversity and avoid antisocial behaviour. The young people we’ll be recognizing at our awards presentation displayed these skills in a variety of ways. We hope the community will join us to celebrate them and their accomplishments.
“We’ll also be using the occasion to recognize the support of all the schools, teachers and partnering organisations without whom these voyages would not be possible. Additionally, it’s an opportunity for us to give a big thanks to our generous donors who continue to support our world-class youth development programmes.”
