A series of workshops for athletes, coaches, administrators and parents will continue this weekend as part of the Performance Mindset Series, featuring visiting psychologist Dr Tony Tucci.

The series is run by Five Rings, an organisation led by Olympic swimmer Jenny Smatt, dedicated to the development and performance enhancement of athletes in Bermuda and beyond.

The workshops/sessions started yesterday [May 5] and run until tomorrow [May 7] and include: Competing Carefree – Unlocking Peak Performance by Reducing Worry, You’re Ready – Controlling the Inner Voice, and Becoming Race Ready – Developing the Performance Mindset.

Sessions are being held at Police Recreation Club, the National Sports Centre classroom and the Lido Complex.

Dr Tucci, of My360Mindset, is a fully licenced psychologist specialising in performance psychology with more than 11 years of clinical experience and more than eight years of trauma-informed care in the education system.

Smatt, who also coaches at the Harbour Swim Club, believes it is imperative for athletes to have the mental tools to complement their physical prowess.

“When we think of an athlete’s team, you have coaches, physios, and you should really have a sports psychology element,” she told Bernews.

“It’s a requirement these days. You hear Flora Duffy talk about how sports psychology was important when going through a difficult part of her career. It’s just a part of her team now.”

Smatt, who represented Bermuda at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, added: “Dr Tony has been working with my swimmers via Zoom for the last year, one-on-one and group sessions. We’ve had some great feedback.”
