HRC Thanks Public For Providing Feedback
The Executive Officer of the Human Rights Commission Lisa Reed thanked members of the public for their engagement in the island-wide consultation, which started in March 2023 and concluded on April 7, 2023.
A spokesperson said, “The objective of the consultation was to hear from any who may have experienced or was currently experiencing discrimination or harassment in their quest for somewhere to live.”
Ms. Reed stated, “The Human Rights Commission has incorporated the feedback received from the public into the policy recommendations that were submitted to the Government of Bermuda.
“Based on the nature of the information collected during the consultation period, members of the public are experiencing or have experienced discriminatory practices in Bermuda. Some of the examples shared related to characteristics such as race, place of origin, sex or sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, disability, and religion, and concerned protected areas such as housing, publications, goods, facilities and services, and employment.”
Ms. Reed added, “We appreciate the time each person took to answer the questions and share their experiences. These submissions will help the Commission to focus on these human rights areas with the view to reducing and eliminating discrimination in Bermuda.”

“The Human Rights Act, 1981, requires for complaints to be made within six months of an alleged contravention; however, complaints may still be filed up to two years after an alleged contravention if the Executive Officer is satisfied that there are good reasons for the delay and that no one will be prejudiced by the delay.”
Lisa Reed concluded, “The Commission appreciates the responses received and we look forward to future public engagements as we continue to progress developments to Bermuda’s Human Rights Act.”
