Somerset Primary Students Celebrate Earth Day
Youngsters from Somerset Primary School celebrated Earth Day recently by participating in activities to show their appreciation of the planet.
As part of the global event, which is now in its 53rd year, students listened to The Giving Tree, an American children’s book written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein, voted to support penguins by donating a dollar each to the World Wildlife Fund, and learned how to sign petitions supporting the environment.
A school spokesperson said: “We found out that signing a petition can get things changed by raising awareness of an environmental problem or by helping get a law passed that will help our planet.
“We also had access to the Global Earth Days suggestion packet, thanks to the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, shared with parents.
“Students were challenged to share pictures of themselves carrying out their chosen Earth Day activities from this list.
“The school’s EcoClub students baked Earth Day cookies to show we appreciate our planet.”
