Somersfield Academy students recently took part in the Global Classrooms International Model United Nations [GCIMUN] Conference in New York.

A spokesperson said, “A Somersfield Academy delegation of M4 and DP1 students flew to New York over the weekend to participate in the Global Classrooms International Model United Nations Conference. Over 1,000 students participated from 37 schools from around the world.”

Trip Coordinator Anne-Laure Bazin said, “This year, GCIMUN offered a variety of important topics to be researched, such as children’s mental health during crises, the impact of media disinformation on political processes, the enhancement of cybersecurity protocols in a remote work world, and the examination of healthcare access to marginalized communities.

“Somersfield has been implementing the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme [IBMYP] for over 10 years now and it is fully embedded into our curriculum structure to ensure a smooth transition to the IB Diploma Programme. Students who are participating at this event have been actively participating in our MYP course — Individuals and Societies — and often choose to go on to take Global Politics as an option in our IB Diploma course options.”

The spokesperson said, “The students were accompanied by Global Politics and Individuals and Societies teacher Lauren MacNeil and the Head of School Riki Teteina.”

Mr. Teteina said, “As an International Baccalaureate World School, we are committed to our vision of creating socially conscious, actively engaged, critical thinkers. The GCIMUN event epitomizes our aspirations, and our 10 delegates are perfectly placed to be active participants through their experience of the IBMYP. Our participating delegates convened for three days in New York to find resolutions that can offer a more understanding and compassionate future for all.”

The spokesperson said, “On Saturday, the delegation debated real world issues in the actual United Nations Assembly Hall, representing the United Kingdom and Yemen.”

Vice Chair of the Board of Directors Polina Branco said, “We are delighted to have Somersfield Academy return to this important event, which has not been able to operate for the last four years due to Covid. It is great to see the seedlings of our community’s courage to provide the IB Diploma at Somersfield bearing fruit.”
