Tropical Storm Cindy Forms In The Atlantic
Tropical Storm Cindy — the third named storm of the 2023 hurricane season — is “not a threat to Bermuda at this time,” the Bermuda Weather Service said, with its closest point of approach within 72 hours forecast to be 625 nm to the SSE at 12pm on Monday, June 26, with the BWS noting that “this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track.”

The latest forecast from the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “At 1100 AM AST [1500 UTC], the center of Tropical Storm Cindy was located near latitude 12.5 North, longitude 48.0 West. Cindy is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph [26 km/h] and this general motion is expected to continue over the next few days.
“On the forecast track, the system is expected to remain well east and northeast of the northern Leeward Islands through early next week. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 mph [85 km/h] with higher gusts. Some additional strengthening is forecast over the next day or so followed by gradual weakening afterwards.”

The BWS forecast discussion stated, “It should be noted that outside of the forecast period, the GFS remains the most aggressive model in the forecast of Tropical Storm Cindy and has the system passing over or near Bermuda sometime later next week as strong tropical storm or weak hurricane.
“Conversely, the ECMWF degenerates Cindy in a remnant low by next Tuesday and gradually sends whatever is left of the system towards our area later next week. The UK model maintains a weak low throughout next week that may re-acquire tropical cyclone characteristics.
“With vast differencing in the models and the official NHC forecast being one that degenerates Cindy into a remnant low,, only time will tell. It remains way too early to say if this system will have any impact on Bermuda and a very close eye will be continued to be placed on this system.”
