Jarryd Dillas has backed the Bermuda men’s golfers to win individual and team medals at the NatWest International Island Games in Guernsey, the Channel Islands, after returning home empty-handed when they last competed at the biennial event in Gotland in 2017.

Dillas, who missed the ongoing Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, El Salvador, because of work commitments, is the most experienced of the men’s quartet of Oliver Betschart, Adam Perry and Jevon Roberts.

At the 2017 Games, the last time golf was part of the programme, the men’s quartet of Walker Campbell, Dillas, Will Haddrell and Mark Phillips finished fourth in the team event, with Dillas placing fifth individually.

Having missed out on medals in Gotland, Dillas said the men’s team felt they have a point to prove in Guernsey.

“We’re looking to put that right,” he told Bernews. “I was one spot out of the play-off for bronze, and the men’s team finished fourth. We were very close to a medal. Hopefully, we can get back on the podium in Guernsey.”

Bermuda’s golfers have been perennial medal winners at the Games since first entering the competition in 2005. In seven previous appearances, the Bermuda men have won team gold on three occasions [2007, 2009 and 2013] and added third-place finishes in 2005 and 2015.

All four of Bermuda’s men’s team have been part of the Bermuda Golf Association’s high-performance training squad since February with a view to building towards the Guernsey Games.

“We have a good mix of experience and youth,” Dillas added. “We’re all playing well and looking forward to it.”

The golf event will be held at the L’Ancresse Links Golf Club.
