The Bermuda women’s golfers are eyeing the gold medal in the team event at the NatWest International Island Games in Guernsey, the Channel Islands.

The women’s team consists of Kim Botelho, Tracy Burgess, Ebonie Cox and Ann Symonds. They start their individual and team events at the L’Ancresse Links Golf Course tomorrow [July 11].

The Bermuda women’s team have enjoyed medal success at previous Games, winning gold in Aland in 2009, silver in the Shetland Islands in 2005 and bronze in Rhodes in 2007.

“We’re hoping to bring home a team gold,” Burgess told Bernews. “We’d like to medal individually as well; however, our main hopes are the team event.”

Burgess, competing at her first Games, said the team had been getting to grips with the links course [built on sandy soil along a coastline] during practise over the past few days.

“We’ve been to the course to have a look at it and have some practice,” she added.

“A links course is quite different from Bermuda. We wanted to feel the greens, see if it was a hilly course, a flat course, where the trouble is.

“It’s a pretty tight course compared to what we see at home. We’re expecting some stiff competition among the low handicappers, but it’s nothing we can’t handle.”
