BELCO Provides Update On Hurricane Franklin

August 31, 2023 | 0 Comments

BELCO today provided an update on Hurricane Franklin which passed by Bermuda on Wednesday, August 30.

Managing Director of Transmission, Distribution and Retail [TD&R] Shelly Leman said: “Our entire team at BELCO was well prepared for any possible impacts from Hurricane Franklin but thankfully Bermuda was spared the worst of the storm. While we did have some minor outages, these were predominantly caused by trees and foliage coming into contact with our overhead network.”

BELCO is now monitoring Tropical Storm Idalia which is forecast to potentially impact the island this weekend.

Ms. Leman said: “I urge residents to remain vigilant and prepared for Tropical Storm Idalia and any other storms that may impact us this season. The most important action residents and businesses can take to prevent outages is to ensure vegetation on their properties is trimmed at least 10 feet away from BELCO power lines. It is important to note that BELCO does not offer a tree trimming service. Ensuring that trees on private property remain 10 feet away from power lines is the sole responsibility of property owners.”

The spokesperson said, “BELCO works to ensure that trees are cut back near main line circuits and some branch lines. Should property owners wish to trim their trees, it is critically important to remember that a power line’s electricity must be disconnected before trimming trees next to it. To schedule a temporary disconnection for tree trimming safety, property owners can call BELCO at 295-5111 or email treetrimming@belco.bm.”
