Keimya Smith Takes Part In NY Broadway Camp
16-year-old Keimya Smith had the opportunity to participate in Camp Broadway during the month of July.
A spokesperson said, “The New York city based camp emphasizes the importance of the ensemble in musical theatre. The ensemble is comprised of talented triple-threat performers who are the backbone of every Broadway musical.
“Keimya, who is a talented dancer and singer, decided that this camp would be a great experience for her because she would get to work on her skills in these areas and learn more about acting.
“Taught by accomplished Broadway professionals with expertise in staging, choreography and music direction, the campers were led through a rigorous rehearsal process to master songs and scenes of the Broadway show 42nd Street which they performed at the Family Finale Showcase on a New York stage.”
Ms Smith said, “It was a fun experience and I learned a bunch of new things and met alot of new people who share my passion. I also had the opportunity to go behind the scenes on Broadway and meet people within the industry. The camp boosted my confidence because I was chosen to open the show and was placed center stage throughout the show.”
The spokesperson said, “Keimya’s dream is to perform on Broadway. While in New York she was able to see Hamilton, which is her favorite musical, Wicked and MJ, the new Michael Jackson musical. Seeing these performances was another highlight of her trip and inspired her to continue working towards her goal.
“Keimya is currently a student at The Berkeley Institute where she is a member of the school choir and spends a good deal of her spare time in the music room learning as much as she can from her music teacher Mr. John Wooldridge. She has also received coaching from Kaelyn Kastle and Joy Barnum.
“Keimya is passionate about dance and has been dancing with United Dance Productions under the Artistic direction of Suzette Harvey since the age of three. At UDP Keimya does ballet, tap, jazz, modern and Hip Hop classes. She is also a senior member of their Junior Company.
“Keimya believes the timing of her Camp Broadway experience was perfect because she has been cast as an ensemble member in the upcoming Sarafina production by Troika. She can now apply what she learned as she prepares for the show.
“Camp Broadway is great for theater-loving kids interested in learning about Broadway and what it means to be a creative, collaborative and contributing professional on stage and off. Their mantra is Develop Your Character and they state, ‘character isn’t just the role one plays on stage. By their final bow, a Mainstage camper has gained confidence, honed their craft and learned that teamwork, respect for others and personal responsibility builds Good Character and a great performer in life.’
“Keimya is grateful to have had this experience and is committed to continuing to pursue her goal of having a career in performing arts.”
