Golf: Bermuda PGA Select vs Yorkshire PGA
Kim Swan, Treasurer & Past President of the Bermuda PGA and Andrew Smith, Secretary Yorkshire PGA are realizing a vision to bring together two PGA jurisdictions.
A spokesperson said, “The event is being held on Sunday, September 24th, 2023 at Forest Park Golf Club in the historic region of York. We are deeply indebted to host professional Mark Winterburn who is an accomplished player competing on the 8-man Yorkshire PGA Team. Yorkshire PGA are fielding a strong team.”
Kim Swan shared, “Andrew Smith and I have been discussing launching this event for a year and the concept made so much sense for both the Bermuda PGA and for Yorkshire PGA.”
Benefits for Tourism
The spokesperson said, “Bermuda needs increased visitors in the fall and winter months especially. A time of year when it’s bitter cold in Great Britain. Golf is a major sport throughout the British Isles and the golfers are all connected to a course that has its own golf professional staff. All of these professionals are members of the PGA of Great through their region. Yorkshire is a large region more than 150 golf courses.”
Kim Swan continued, “Sports Tourism is an important part of the National Tourism Plan and as a professional athlete there are contacts I have that have want to share with my country.”
“On this occasion I’m able to visit and check on the health of my daughter living in the United Kingdom and do my part to help build relationships for the betterment of my golf professional colleagues and our country.”
Bermuda PGA Select
“The Bermuda team comprises of Bermuda PGA members residing in the United Kingdom and invited golfers with a Bermuda connection.”
The spokesperson said, “When building the team I was reminded of the British Caledonian Scottish Golfers of the 1970’s and 80’s. The idea is to compete against PGA Regions while spreading the love of Bermuda encouraging golfers to visit our shores.”
Building Relationships Key to Rebuilding Tourism
The spokesperson said, “Our efforts are an organic grassroots style of outreach to share the virtues of Bermuda with a vast golf community in the UK.”
