Grassroots Cricket Academy defeated Bermuda Select XI by six wickets at White Hill Field, as the Bermuda Premier League [BPL] got underway under brilliant sunshine.

Bermuda batted first and were all out for 74 in 14.3 overs, with Allan Douglas Jr the Island’s top scorer with 28, batting at No. 4.

Onias Bascome was next high man, scoring 11, before he was caught by Amahl Nathaniel at deep, backward square leg off the bowling of Isiah Attwood.

Miandre James was the Antigua and Barbuda team’s leading wicket-taker, as he took three wickets for 12 runs for Grassroots Cricket Academy, while Jedidiah Martin and captain Kadeem Henry each took two wickets.

Michael Dover was named the Man-of-the-Match, after he scored 57 not out for the visitors, anchoring the innings for the youthful side.

The opening batter maintained his poise as wickets fell around him, taking a liking to the Bermuda bowling attack, launching five sixes and three fours.

MacQuille Walker claimed two wickets in his first two overs, reducing Grassroots Cricket Academy to 11 for two, but Dover stood firm in leading a recovery.

“We got some early wickets and pegged them down to 76,” said Dover, after receiving the Man-of-the-Match award. “In our batting innings we were a little anxious and wanted to get to the score as quickly as possible.

“We lost a couple early wickets, but as a team we stood there and were able to accomplish our goal.

“I want to donate this award to my son and my family back in Antigua, because that innings was for them.”

For Bermuda Walker took two wickets, while Shakai Darrell and Allan Douglas claimed one wicket apiece.
