Somerset’s DeSilva Calls Time On Captaincy

Somerset’s Jordan DeSilva has decided to step down as captain of Cup Match champions, Somerset Cricket Club at season’s end.

A three-time Cup Match winning skipper, DeSilva made known his decision to step away from the position during Friday night’s annual Cup Match prize presentation at the west end club, expressing thanks, while adding that he was not retiring from the sport and would likely make himself available for team selection, if deemed worthy of a regular place in the team.

DeSilva’s announcement followed long-time head coach Jeff Richardson’s recent revelation at this year’s Classic that next year will be his last in charge of instructing the squad, with former star player Janeiro [Mr Cup Match] Tucker pegged as ‘coach in waiting’.

A veteran left-arm medium-pace bowler and middle to late order batsman, DeSilva guided Somerset to a pair of ten wicket victories, after leading the team to an innings victory in 2018.

DeSilva took over the mantle from Jekon Edness in 2017 and Somerset has never lost the mid-summer spectacle under his leadership.

It has been Somerset’s want to install new captains at home games, which will again be the case next year, although it is, as yet, unknown if they will promote someone already with the club’s league team or draft in an outsider.

Bailey’s Bay captain Terryn Fray has served as DeSilva’s vice-captain at Cup Match for the past few years, while Greg Maybury has occupied a similar role for the club side, however the latter was dropped from the Cup Match team this year.

I’m guessing the second placers (AKA St. Georges fans) think they’re seeing a glimmer of hope of the horizon. LOL I think not!!!

Jason thank you for your years of competitive matches leadership and steadfastness. We have seen some brilliant cricket matches under your captaincy

  3. Jordan had 7 successful years as Somerset’s Captain but he couldn’t have done it without the backing of his team and in my opinion the logical choise to succeed him as Somerset’s Cup match Captain is Terryn Fray but that’s only my opinion others may disagree
