Review: Pinky’s Restaurant & Drive Thru
[Written by Dale Butler]
I have great memories of Tom Cat, a drive thru restaurant that once existed in the City of Hamilton and was known for its soft ice cream. Drive thru has been very popular in the USA but had never caught on in Bermuda.
With that said, the announcement by the FoodHub Restaurant Group that one would be opening at 95 Middle Road in Devonshire was greeted with long lines on its opening night.
On the long stretch from Reid Street East on to Middle Road toward Flatts, there are no restaurants so “Pinky’s Drive Thru” [five minutes from Hamilton] has established itself in what was a mini-mart. It looks brand new, the inside is fresh and well designed. With a change in management, prices are competitive, with some being the lowest anywhere on the island.
After a hectic morning preparing for an upcoming series “Mind the Onion Seed,” I decided to stop in. Customers leaving greeted me, and told me without asking that I had made a good decision. The facility not only has a drive thru with a very friendly Bermudian voice [cameras saw me], but the new inside service offers:
- Freddie’s Meal and Market
- Value meals less than $7
- A restaurant menu
Pinky’s now has something for everyone. Pinky’s building is very large and offers four options to customers.
- They started with the quick service drive thru menu [now new with crispy fried chicken]
They have now added:
- a self-serve buffet
- a Grab and go convenience store and variety store with groceries, snacks, toiletries, soft drinks, fresh bread, a variety of fresh baked cakes and desserts, liquor and ice cream
- a chef-driven restaurant menu with delicious Greek items, Caribbean roti, Indian curries, pizzas, fried calamari and other seafood. The restaurant menu is only available by calling in [553-9906], walking in or ordering online online. This menu is not available in the drive thru.
The grounds are immaculate, there is lots of space to park, and a few tables to sit and eat. It is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7.30am to 10pm [Sundays: noon to 10pm] offering a wide selection of freshly prepared dishes, breads and desserts.
Upon entry, the buffet takes centre stage and although I was there late in the day, it all looked fresh – fried fish, curry, lamb, chicken, beef, veg, peas and rice, Spanish Rice, mac and cheese, Casava pie, soup and more, all labelled. A feast!
The food was very tasty and not greasy. Food Hub owner Marico Thomas is the son of the famous boxer and entrepreneur Freddie Thomas and mother Clara who developed the most unique and cultural anniversary gift with a beautifully designed wheelbarrow that he annually used to transport his wife to their home.
With a bit of caution, the street exit is very negotiable. Just do not let the smell of the food force you to race home. I had a 10 minute drive home and it was still warm and very satisfying.
The next morning I returned inside for a breakfast sandwich which was prepared in four minutes. A great start to my day with a delicious cup of coffee. Service was good and I salute Manager Sagar and Chef Kiran Rajput for running a smooth operation which is destined to grow.
