November 10, 2023

There will be changes to various Ministries and Ministerial responsibilities spanning topics including youth affairs, financial assistance, Caricom, planning, constitutional reformand tourism, the Premier announced.

Speaking during his Throne Speech address last night, Premier David Burt said, “In keeping with a recent review conducted by the Management Consulting Section, responsibility for Youth Affairs will move to make a newly styled Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors under Minister Tinee Furbert. Recognising that most of its recipients are seniors & the disabled, Financial Assistance also becomes part of this Ministry.

“I have also asked the Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs to assume responsibility for all matters related to Caricom and the area of constitutional reform.

“The Department of Planning will now move to the Cabinet Office under Minister Vance Campbell, while responsibility for tourism will move to a ministry to be styled as the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport under Senator Owen Darrell.

“These changes in responsibility have been provided to the Governor and will take effect tomorrow, 10th November.”

Really? You are taking “constitutional reform” away from the Ministry of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Reform and giving it to the Deputy Premier (who is not a lawyer)?

Would someone please explain the logic in such a move?

Obviously, the Minister and cabinet would discuss these reforms and they woulo then actually be handled by the lawyers. Minister’s themselves don’t draft legislation, as you well know.

Time for election get rid of the PLP. Burt is a joke

    These changes make sense.
Minister Darrell has shown himself to be quite competent and accessible and adding tourism to his responsibilities is a perfect fit.

Likewise, giving Minister Tinee Furbert Youth to add to her Seniors and Social Development portfolio is a stellar move. She is widely respected and regarded and should thrive in this additional role.
