Boxer Nikki Bascome has paid a touching tribute to Horace Roger Trott Sr, a long-time member of his coaching team, who died recently.

Mr Trott was a regular presence at the former Forty Rego’s Boxing Gym, opened by the late Allan “Forty” Rego at Cross End Lane in Warwick in 1980, and later at the Fresh and Hungry Boxing Club at TN Tatum Middle School in Warwick.

Known as “Lightning”, Mr Trott, who lived in Pembroke, was the husband of Gina Trott. His funeral will be at the Amis Memorial Chapel on Khyber Pass, Warwick.

Bascome, who has won 12 of his 13 professional welterweight bouts, wrote on Instagram: “I’m going to miss you, Lightning. Thank you for everything.

“I will never forget the good times. It’s not going to be the same without you in the gym, always giving everybody nicknames, lol.

“They call me ‘Nifty’ because of you. You would always remind me when I was making mistakes. You may think I wasn’t listening to you, but I was soaking it all up.

“I promise I won’t forget all the things you taught me. From in the ring to the garden to just being a good man and father.

“Those drives with you in the car talking about faith were really a huge inspiration to me.”

Bascome, 33, added: “I love you, Lightning. You and Rego were both like a father to me. Once you get settled in heaven, tell Rego I said, ‘Que Pasa’.

“The stable is still going strong. We will continue to make you guys proud. I know you two are going to have a blast up in heaven going at each other. Love you, man.”
