Several of Bermuda’s former athletics stars will share their life experiences with high school athletes as part of the inaugural C.L.A.S.S Athletic [Curating Legacy Athletes through Scholastic Success] Athlete to Professional Career Experience on Saturday [November 25].

Organised by former triple jumper Allison Outerbridge, the event will be at Prospect Police Recreation Club from 2 pm to 4.30 pm and is open to high school athletes actively competing in athletics.

Outerbridge said the event aims to “bridge the gap” between education and athletic excellence, prepare athletes for college and university, and allow them to learn more about future careers.

A team of ten C.L.A.S.S mentors – Taylor-Ashley Bean, Eulannae Douglas, Alexis Bean, Jasmine Brunson, Latroya Darrell, Andrea Hinds, Trey Simons, Taijaun Talbot, Juma Mouchette and Henry Stevens-Carty – will be on hand to share their stories, particular their post-athletics experiences. Many other former top local track and field athletes will also be in attendance to meet with the high school athletes.

“We’re all former athletes who came through the ranks of track and field and have a melting pot of different experiences,” Outerbridge told Bernews.

“It’s one thing to say someone is a gifted athlete, whether that’s running, jumping or throwing; it’s another thing to say someone is a well-rounded individual. That’s the mission of Class Athletic.

“We want our athletes to stand tall and say, ‘Not only am I a class athlete, I’m a class act, and carry myself with integrity with the community.’

“We want to give our athletes the resources to thrive outside athletics.”

The event will also feature a series of interactive activities, including mock interviews and a panel discussion with former athletes Rohaan Simons [Entrepreneurship/Trade Profession], Derrick Golding [Police Service], Latroya Darrell [Allied Health Services], Trey Simons [Re-insurance], and Taylor-Ashley Bean [Financial Services].

“All of the former athletes have skillsets they have acquired through their careers,” said Outerbridge, a former Bermuda National Athletics Association vice-president.

“Our athletes might be interested to learn more about those career paths and our experiences after athletics.

“I won’t be at the event as ‘Allison Outerbridge, former athlete and coach’; I’ll be there as ‘Allison Outerbridge, registered dietician’.

“The athletes of my generation never really had opportunities to mingle with those athletes who came through a decade before us. We’re trying to build a community.”
