“Van Putten is the recent winner of Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda’s Racial Justice Award for her work creating an independent, African-centered, community education programme, Ashay University, with modest funding from her adult students.
“The genesis for her latest poetry offering began during the pandemic. Van Putten was invited to move Ashay University’s in-person community classes to a television format on Channel 82; she created Mwalimu Dropping Da Knowledge [MDDK]. Lamone Woods, owner of CrimsonMedia and Channel 82, and a participant in Ashay University classes, wanted to MDDK to model her classes, complete with original poetry. Currently in season 3, Van Putten has written dozens of poems for MDDK to underscore the lessons of history, culture, consciousness, community, empowerment, and what must be done today. In her eighth volume of poetry, Van Putten poetically illuminates Black expressions of spirituality, resistance, power, honor, joy, love and connections that are thought-provoking, insightful, powerful and inspirational – themes that are expressed on MDDK.
“In addition to Expressions of Blackness: Spirituality, Resistance, Power, Honor, Joy, Love, Connections, a number of Van Putten’s books will also be available, including Ashay! Bermuda Stories for Children and Ashay! Bermuda History for Young People. Van Putten’s mission to provide academically based and empowering information for the community is reflected in her various books of poetry, history, children’s cultural fiction and adult short stories.
“The book launch of Expressions of Blackness: Spirituality, Resistance, Power, Honor, Joy, Love, Connections will be held at the Bermuda National Library on Thursday, December 7th from 6 to 7:30 pm on the second floor and the book will be available at Bookmart.”
