BRSC Launches Designated Driver Campaign
The Bermuda Road Safety Council [BRSC] launched its December campaign, “Designated Driver/Designate your Driver” noting that “we want this holiday season to be of joy and cheer, and by being responsible and adhering to the rules of the road we can make this happen.”
A spokesperson said, “The BRSC announces its slogan for December, “Designated Driver/Designate your Driver”. As we travel about the roads in December, it is crucial to address a pressing concern that affects the safety of all road users – drunk driving. The consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol are severe and far-reaching, posing a significant threat to lives and well-being. This month, we stand united in our commitment to eradicate drunk driving from our community, making our roads safer for everyone.
The Dangers of Drunk Driving
“Driving under the influence of alcohol jeopardizes not only the safety of the driver but also that of passengers, pedestrians, and fellow motorists. It impairs judgment, slows reaction times, and increases the likelihood of accidents. The devastating impact of drunk driving can result in injuries, loss of life, and irreparable harm to individuals and families.
Our Collective Responsibility
“Combatting drunk driving requires a collective effort from every member of our community. Together, we can create a culture of responsibility and awareness to ensure that our roads are safe for all. Here are key principles to uphold:
- Designate a Sober Driver: Before heading out, plan for a designated driver who will remain alcohol-free and ensure a safe journey for everyone.
- Use Alternative Transportation: Embrace the availability of taxis, or minibuses as alternatives to driving under the influence.
- Intervene Responsibly: If you witness someone attempting to drive under the influence, take a stand. Offer alternative transportation options, involve a sober friend, or contact local authorities if necessary.
- Educate and Raise Awareness: Engage in community outreach and educational programs to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. Knowledge is a powerful tool in preventing this hazardous behavior.
- Host Alcohol-Free Events: Organize and participate in events that promote responsible drinking or are entirely alcohol-free, fostering a positive and safe environment.
- Support Law Enforcement: Uphold and respect traffic laws related to alcohol consumption. Law enforcement plays a crucial role in deterring drunk driving, and community support is vital in ensuring their effectiveness.
December Pledge Against Drunk Driving
“This December, let us collectively pledge to prioritize the safety of our roads by taking a firm stance against drunk driving. By committing to responsible choices and fostering a community culture that rejects impaired driving, we can create a lasting impact on the well-being of our community.
“Remember, the choices we make on the road affect not only ourselves but also those around us. Together, we can build a safer, more responsible community where everyone can travel without fear of the devastating consequences of drunk driving.
“December, is the holiday and Christmas season and while there will be an increase of social events and family gatherings, we encourage motorists to think about their loved ones and how their actions on our roads will impact them. This is a time to share with family and friends, so let’s keep that in our minds and choose wisely. Chose to drink responsibly and not to drink and drive. We want this holiday season to be of joy and cheer, and by being responsible and adhering to the rules of the road we can make this happen.
“Slow Down, Drive with care and caution, and Don’t Drink and Drive, Bermuda.
“Have a safe and happy holiday.”
