Motorcyclist Arrested For Driving While Impaired

December 10, 2023

A motorcycle rider — with a ‘small child on the back of the motorcycle’ — was arrested for driving while impaired while riding a motorcycle that had previously been reported stolen, and a “relative of the arrested man attended the scene where he became combative and was arrested,” the police have confirmed.

A police spokesperson said, “Shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Friday, December 8th, 2023, officers were on mobile patrol on North Shore Road, in the vicinity of the Esso service station, Crawl Hill, Hamilton Parish, when they observed a motorcycle traveling in an easterly direction overtake a number of cars and almost collided with traffic traveling in the opposite direction.

“Police activated their emergency equipment signalling for the vehicle to stop. The motorcycle rider failed to stop for police and continued traveling along North Shore Road.

“Officers monitored the vehicle’s movements from a distance and approached once it came to a stop after having turned onto Summit View Drive.

“Officers observed a small child on the back of the motorcycle.

“They then engaged the motorcycle rider, a male, at which point they observed signs of impairment.

“Demands were made for samples of breath from the rider but he refused and was subsequently arrested for driving while impaired.

“A check on the motorcycle revealed it had previously been reported stolen. The male was further arrested for taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and cautioned.

“A relative of the arrested man attended the scene where he became combative and was arrested for conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

“The child was left safely in the care of another relative.

“Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact, Police Constable, Jordan Basden by calling 211 or, via e-mail at, jordan.basden@bps.bm

    This is news?
    Come on.

You seriously don’t think that someone driving a stolen bike dangerously, while impaired, with a child on the back is not news? To top it the poor child may have had to witness the combative relative being arrested.

What people see regularly is not considered newsworthy.

Now imagine not being under the influence, but texting while driving a bike with a child onboard. A pretty common sight.

Having to witness the combative relative get arrested is in fact a good life lesson for the child, seeing a relative act the fool trying to back someone riding like a lunatic whilst impaired and in control of a minor is the bad part. The court outcome will probably leave the child, like the rest of us, totally confounded.

Yes, it is news. It may be all too common, but it is still news.

Unfortunately I think this is all too common behavior. I hope that the punishment fits the crime.

What crime? The “Rules” of the road have been reduced to mere suggestions and the Bermuda Police Service has not enforced the Road Traffic Act for about 20 years.
