A networking reception was held to highlight the new partnership between the Bermuda College and Troy University in Alabama.
Troy Alumnus and Junior Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport Kim Swan said, “I’ve lived long enough to appreciate that a vision without good works dies but in this case for Bermuda, our US Consul General The Hon. Karen Grissette and Troy University’s Vice Chancellor Sohail Agboatwala made it happen for Bermuda.
“Many great things occurred through this whirlwind visit to Bermuda and to have the Chancellor of Troy University Dr. Jack Hawkins and First Lady Janice Hawkins travel to Bermuda to ratify this agreement is not only huge for the relationship between Troy University and Bermuda College but also between Bermuda and the United States.
“In the past two years especially, Troy University have sent international recruiter young Miss Bailey Corbin, a Troy graduate from nearby Panhandle coast of Florida to Bermuda. Apart from having two Bermuda names and a potential St. David’s kinship, Miss Corbin’s effervescent personality warms the heart of all she meets.
“Her great work has realized two young Bermuda College students signing to begin the Baccalaureate studies at Troy University in August 2024 in Nursing and Bio Medical studies. It’s noteworthy that the Minister of Education was on hand to celebrate that historic moment and offered both of those students ten-thousand-dollar scholarships in honour of their signing to attend Troy University.
“The collaborative work between the US Consulate and Bermuda College has yielded a great harvest because Troy University is looking far beyond this signing and seeing the needs of our community and how a good relationship between all parties can truly enhance that.
“President of the Senate Senator Joan Dillas Wright – a nurse by trade and former CEO of the Bermuda’s hospital – saw the value of Troy’s Nursing Program which now offers doctorial degree in nursing. At the welcome hosted by Retired Justice Norma Wade Miller, she unexpectedly came forward and from her heart a pledged twenty thousand dollars to assist with getting students to attend Troy University to study nursing.
“So we hail this historic partnership and celebrate the efforts of those behind the scenes at the Bermuda College, Sohail Agboatwala’s team at Troy University and the Honourable Karen Grissette’s team at the US Consul in Bermuda.”
