Council Urges Drivers To Exercise Caution

“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and a fundamental aspect of this responsibility is maintaining a safe distance while driving. Appropriate spacing between vehicles is critical for preventing accidents, ensuring reaction time, and enhancing overall road safety,” the Bermuda Road Safety Council [BRSC] said.

A spokesperson said, “Tailgating is a prevalent problem in Bermuda. Tailgating is dangerous; if the vehicle in front has to suddenly brake, there is no time for the vehicle in back to react.”

“It is very important to maintain a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you while driving. The “following distance” is the term for the distance that you should be behind a vehicle. The correct following distance is 3 seconds in good driving conditions and 5 in bad conditions. The proper way to measure your distance is to time when the vehicle in front of you passes a stationery object and then when you pass that object. By keeping the correct following distance you can have enough time to react to any situation in front of you.

“In the spirit of collective road safety, let’s prioritize maintaining safe distances while driving. Keep a respectful space between vehicles, adhering to the 3 second rule. This simple act enhances reaction time, reduces the risk of collisions, and contributes to a safer road environment for all. Your commitment to safe distances is a pledge to responsible driving and the well-being of every road user.

“The BRSC sends a plea out to motorcycle riders to ride with care and caution. The prevalent disregard for safety while riding is astounding. We want to encourage riders to obey the traffic laws and to slow down.

“We remind the public of 3 key points to apply to their travels – 1] the 3 second rule 2] tailgating awareness 3] anticipate unpredictability.

“The road safety council continues to press on with our mandate to educate and raise awareness for road safety in Bermuda. We all must to do our individual part to help make our roads safer.

“Remember to drive with care and caution, don’t drink and drive, and slow down Bermuda.”
