New System For BZS Aqua Camp Registration

March 5, 2024 | 0 Comments

As part of their ongoing efforts to improve access to summer Aqua Camps, the Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] has made significant changes to the online registration process.

A spokesperson said, “For the 2024 Aqua Camps, registration will be conducted through a lottery process, rather than on a “first come, first served” basis. The online lottery registration period will be open for 10 days and, once it has closed, a randomised, computer-based process will be used to select families from the pool of all lottery entrants.”

“These changes were based on feedback from parents and guardians who found it stressful, if not impossible, to arrange their workdays so they could be in front of a computer at the appropriate sign-up time,” said Dr. Stephanie Toro, BZS Education Officer.

“The lottery will create more equitable access to registration, allow more time for families to decide on camp dates, and give new campers and previously waitlisted campers equal ability to register.”

The spokesperson said, “The BZS team is also making changes to help meet the high demand for Aqua Camps by increasing enrollment through careful consideration that makes more efficient use of our space, resources, and team.

“Here are key dates that parents and guardians need to know ahead of the 2024 Aqua Camp Registration Lottery:

  • March 15th: Online Aqua Camp lottery opens
  • March 25th: Online Aqua Camp lottery closes
  • April 9th: Parents/guardians are notified if their child[ren] has been chosen through the lottery system

“A full schedule of the 2024 Aqua Camps, along with camp descriptions, can found online here.

“Please note your BZS membership must be current in order to complete the lottery registration process for Aqua Camp. Specifically, the parents or grandparents of the child[ren] you are registering must have a current, minimum level of Killifish [Family or Grandparent] membership. If your membership has lapsed, you can renew online here.”

“We’re excited about the changes we’ve made to Aqua Camp registration and we hope they reduce the stress that previously surrounded Aqua Camp registration,” Dr. Toro said.

“We also look forward to hearing your feedback on the new lottery system.”

The spokesperson said, “If you have any questions concerning camp activities, please contact Hollyanne Shirley, Education Administrator at edadmin@bzs.bm with “Aqua Camp Query” in the subject line or call 293-2727 ext 2181.”
