The First Devonshire/First West Pembroke Brownies engaged in various initiatives, from performances to beach cleanups, advocating for environmental stewardship and raising awareness about the perils of oceanic pollution.

A spokesperson said, “The First Devonshire/First West Pembroke Brownies continue to soar into their Healthy Family/ Healthy Environment Programme for 2023/24. They participated in the Annual Thinking Day activities at The Cathedral of The Most Holy Trinity on 19th February and shared the plight of marine life in an ‘ Under The Sea’ performance along with other units of the Girl Guide family who presented songs, poems, readings and choral presentations highlighting the Creation and the perils of birds, wildlife and humans as litter and pollution engulf us globally. The Theme for Thinking Day was Our World, Our Thriving Future.

“The First Devonshire/First West Pembroke Brownies designed oceanic animal hats and costumes and appealed to the congregation to lessen the usage of plastics in an effort to prevent oceanic pollution, which kills an alarming number of marine life.

To show their appreciation for Bermuda heroes who spread the word and bring about Environmental Stewardship on the island, they presented an engraved award of Thanks to Mr. Eugene Dean, an Environmental Advocate at Greenrock. Mr. Dean attended a recent Brownie meeting and presented a riveting talk on Plastics in the Ocean and its impact on marine life. Brownies presented excerpts of their presentation at the Cathedral and finished the night with the award presentation of Thanks.

“They will participate in Greenrock’s Earthwatch and conduct surveys on plastics on the shores of Bermuda’s Beaches. They will develop pamphlets to suggest ways of decreasing plastic usage.

“They will be hosted by KBB officers on 14th.March and further explore the impact of litter on the environment. They will join all units in Girlguiding Bermuda and carry out cleanups in April.Their Environmental study will include a Mom and Me Hat Show and tea, with hats being made from tree bark and other environmental items. The hats will be entered in the Ag Show. This will be the 3rd Hat Show presented by the brownies.

“Those interested in becoming incoming leaders and helpers for First Devonshire/First West Pembroke Brownies or other units on the island may write to girlguiding.bm Brownie Leaders are Brown Owl Cathy Bassett, Snowy Owl, Aliyah Philpott and Tawny Owl, Rita Woolridge.
