Bermuda Biennial Draws Over 300 Attendees
The 2024 Bermuda Biennial drew over 300 attendees at its opening at the Bermuda National Gallery on April 12.
A spokesperson said, “Over 300 people attended the opening of the 2024 Bermuda Biennial, Places, Presence & Poetics: An Unpacking, at the Bermuda National Gallery on April 12. The exhibition, which is sponsored by Bacardi Limited, was juried by Chicago based artist Ebony G. Patterson and NYC based arts fair organiser Helen Toomer.
“An open call to Bermudian artists and those resident on the island, the Biennial has been at the core of the contemporary art scene in Bermuda since its inception in 1994. This year’s exhibition brings together 32 artworks by 25 artists; 10 of whom are exhibiting in the Bermuda Biennial for the first time: Nadiyah Brown, Jordan Carey, Keishunda Curtis, Soleé Darrell, DionTheCreative, Johanna Flath, Daisy Gould, Gail Marirea, Zachary Stelios Marshall and Sophie Stubbs.
“The works, which vary in scale, include painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, film and mixed-media installations, provide a striking insight into the themes preoccupying artists today.”
Jennifer L. Phillips, Executive Director of the Bermuda National Gallery, said, “The Bermuda Biennial, now in its 16th iteration, has consistently challenged the boundaries of possibility within the local contemporary art space. This year, we received submissions from an unprecedented number of artmakers who responded to the remarkable opportunity to engage in an internationally juried process. The jurors, who visited Bermuda in January to review the works in person, identified some common thematic threads – highlighting the topics that are most relevant to artists in the current local landscape – and determined the title of the show Places, Presence & Poetics: An Unpacking. The result is a dynamic exhibition of the highest calibre.”
The spokesperson said, “The 2024 Bermuda Biennial is on display at the Bermuda National Gallery through to January. Admission is free, made possible by the Humann Foundation. BNG is open Monday-Friday 10am-4pm and Saturday 10am-2pm.
