Autism Acceptance Month Proclamation
Bermuda Autism Support and Education [BASE] invites the community to attend the proclamation of World Autism Awareness and Acceptance Day, which launches Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in April.
A spokesperson said, “At 12:30pm on Tuesday, 2 April, the Honourable Tinée Furbert, JP, MP, Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, will read the official proclamation. The public is invited to attend.
“BASE, which was initially formed as an autism advocacy group in 2001, notes the shift from Autism Awareness Month to Autism Acceptance Month while acknowledging that autism acceptance and accommodations must be ongoing all year long.”
“When BASE first started over 20 years ago, we did not have as much information about autism as we do now,” stated BASE President, Sherri-Lee Bucci. “The research that has been conducted over the past two decades has given us insight into the importance of seeing autism as contributing to neurodiversity and not as a puzzle to be solved.”
Ms. Bucci continued, “Several autism self-advocacy groups, such as Autism Acceptance Project, Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, the Autism Society of America and the National Autism Society UK, have shifted the focus of April 2nd and the entire month of April from autism awareness to autism acceptance.”
“As the summer approaches, BASE is preparing to offer bursaries to children with autism so that they are able to attend camps with autism accommodations. The information will be posted to BASE’s website [bermudaautism.bm] and social media [@base_bermuda] in the next few weeks.
“Our aim is to keep autism acceptance and accommodations visible for the entire year,” stated Ms. Bucci. “We are pleased to see more awareness about autism; now it’s time for action.”
